We see geo-literacy as providing the tools that will enable communities to protect natural and cultural resources, reduce violent conflict, and improve the quality of life worldwide. However, having a geo-literate populace is also critical for maintaining economic competitiveness, quality of life, and national security in our modern, interconnected world.

The Peoria Area World Affairs Council strives to engage students of all ages.
The largest of PAWAC's annual educational outreach programs. Every Fall, the Peoria Area World Affairs Council hosts 24 high school teams from across Central Illinois. These students meet in Bradley Hall in academic competition for a test of knowledge about the world around us. The winning teams win scholarship prizes with the championship team winning an automatic bid to compete in the WACA Academic WorldQuest in Washington, D.C. in the Spring.
Any high school student in the PAWAC educational outreach area is invited to participate in the annual Interrnational Essay Contest. The theme is announced in November, with submission due in mid-spring. This essay contest offers terrific preparation for future study in global affairs.
The Illinois State Board of Education supports the Illinois Global Scholar program. Students interested in participating in Illinois Global Scholar should first check with their high school to check if they are a sponsor. If a student is interested, but their school does not have a faculty sponsor, students are encouraged to reach out to the Peoria Area World Affairs Council - director@pawac.org - for more information.
