Join us to discuss TWO books this quarter - read them both or just one and bounce ideas around from either perspective. The two books up for discussion have related themes, but the discussion will be lively.
The Dissident: Alexey Navalny: Profile of a Political Prisoner is authored by the veteran Russia-watcher David M. Herszenhorn of the Washington Post. Herszenhorn's new book offers a gripping account of Navalny's life, from his childhood in the Soviet Union to this anti-corruption activism and the Kremlin's heavy-handed attempts to silence him. Now that Navalny has been killed, this book is even more important for its insights.
The Showman: Inside the Invasion that Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky by Simon Shuster. Time magazine correspondent Shuster has followed the career of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as he went from being just an actor on TV to the real-life, heroic wartime leader of a state fighting for its survival. Shuster points out tha tthe depth of Zelensky's commitment to his country goes far beyond the image of his green military garb that Zelensky wears to show support for his troops.
